As Chair of the Assembly Committee on Education it has been my focus in these last few weeks to work toward education reform and funding for our state.

We all know that for our state to move forward we must improve the education system with common sense proposals.

This week I introduced Assembly Bill 161, which will revise the current standards of social promotion. Students are currently able to advance grade levels based on their age, not by their proficiency in reading or math. With this we see many of our students move to the next grade, but fail at comprehension.

Proficiency in reading by the end of 3rd grade is a crucial marker in a child’s educational development. AB161 will change the standard and ensure our children can read by grade three.

It is my hope for the future that we correct our sometimes misguided feelings on education, and move the state forward to build a better Nevada for the students we are raising.

It’s week four of the 77th Session of the Nevada Legislature and I have spent this week focused on one of my passions, and reasons, for becoming a legislator — education. It’s no secret that education is personally a top priority for me at the legislature — as it is for most of us in our state — but as a teacher of 30 years and a former librarian, education has been a part of my everyday life.

As a mother and grandmother, I know that investing in our schools is an investment in the future of Nevada. And as a legislator, I know this investment will create jobs and transform our state.

It has been a busy week for the Assembly Committee on Education. As the Vice Chair, I have had the opportunity to listen to many presentations on just how we are going to move toward a better Nevada.

It is the priority of this legislature to see education in our state moved to higher standards — and that starts by adequately funding our schools. Nevada has an 18 percent English Language Leaner population. We are last in pre-k enrollment, 45th in kindergarten enrollment and have classrooms that are too overcrowded. With the Common Core standards and the ending of social promotion, it is essential that children are enrolled in a high-quality home, private or public education program by age 5. It’s the recommendation of this legislature to phase in pre-k for at-risk students, and to eventually develop a program for all students.

If we do not pass and implement our ideas on education, our state will continue to fall behind. For the future of my grandchildren, I will be here working as long as I have to in order to ensure we succeed and build up the education system in our state.

As session continues, please follow along on our website at www.leg.state.nv.us and feel free to contact me at any time by emailing me at Marilyn.DonderoLoop@asm.state.nv.us, or phone 775-684-8833.

It is day 10 of the 77th Session of the Nevada Legislature and we have hit the ground running. We’ve introduced 93 Assembly Bills, referred all to committees, passed two deadlines, and have started productive discussions on what it takes to Build A Better Nevada.

This week we have seen a variety of issues come up in committees, including one of the most important ones – fixing the tax structure in our State. Though this will not be an easy task to handle this session, it is a priority for our state to examine and improve.

My freshman year was exhausting, not knowing where my schedule would take me each day. Fortunately, I had a wonderful attaché who helped keep me on task. There are many things you need to learn as a new legislator right away –such as knowing which bills to read before floor, when and how to speak in committee rooms, and even learning how to grab lunch running from committee to committee. Now that I am in serving in my second term, I have taken on even more responsibilities. While my first week as the Assistant Majority Leader has been an experience of its own, chairing the Assembly Committee on Judiciary has also been challenging. Adding to the excitement, I have also accepted the responsibility of helping guide seven new Democratic legislators through their first session. Fortunately, I again have a great attaché to help me make it through the day.

Being a legislator is not an easy job, but next to being a new dad it is one of the most fulfilling. When at the end of 120 days you can walk away and say, yes, we worked hard for our State and, yes, we have done all that we can to Build A Better Nevada, there are very little things to which that can compare.

As session continues, please follow along on our website at www.leg.state.nv.us and feel free to contact me at any time by e-mailing me at Jason.Frierson@asm.state.nv.us or phone 775-684-8537.

Thanks,
Jason
